history

The Counts of Tecklenburg first founded a chapel in Alswede as a separate church in the 12th century . This chapel was later replaced by a larger church, the stones of which probably came from the destroyed Mesenburg on the Mesenkopf . The church was in the then diocese of Minden .

In 1240 the first Cistercian convent in the county of Tecklenburg was founded in Leeden . Count Otto I von Tecklenburg and his wife Mechthild transferred the St. Andreas Church to the monastery on August 5, 1240. This also included the right to appoint the pastor of the church. In 1295, Count Otto IV. Von Tecklenburg exchanged the patronage rights over the church with the monastery for a court in Lotte .

Since 1724 the right of appointment for the preacher lay with the Prussian king.

In 1819 the rectory could be moved into.

Building history

The church was originally a two-aisled late Gothic hall church from the 16th century. It extended over four yokes and was just closed. The sacristy was attached to the east. The church interior is cross vaulted with ribs and keystones, the eastern yokes are spanned with ridged vaults. The yokes are separated by pointed arches .

In 1893 it was extended to a three-aisled church with a side aisle in the north. At the same time an apse was added to the east . At the end of the 1990s the tiled roof of the church was re-covered.

The lower area of the west tower was built in the 13th or 14th century. The upper floors were added in 1868.

Furnishing

The recessed gallery is built in the Renaissance style and decorated with notch and flat carvings. It bears the year 1563. The pulpit of the church was donated in 1573.

On the vault there are coats of arms of the noble families von Gehlen (Hollwinkel) and Mönk or Münch (Benkhausen), who later had the right of patronage over the church.

On the north side of the tower was a mausoleum of the von Bussche-Münch family.

Bells

There are three bells in the church tower. The oldest has a diameter of 73 cm and bears the inscription

Praise the gentleman with bright cymbals, praise him with bright cymbals,
everything that breathes praise the gentleman! Alleluia!
Cf. ( Psalm 150,5-6  EU )
