The St. Antonius Abbas Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Schönebeck district of Essen . It was built from 1925 to 1927 and today belongs to the parish of St. Josef in Frintrop .

history

On September 30, 1899, the first rector of the emergency church St. Antonius Abbas, which was designated on November 5, 1899 and belonged to the mother parish of St. Dionysius in Borbeck , was appointed. On March 1, 1908, she was parish from the mother parish and raised to a canonical parish.

The foundation stone of the church was laid on July 5, 1925, the consecration by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Hammels on May 8, 1927. In 1931 an altar was added. During the Second World War , the building was destroyed by bombing raids on March 4, 1943 and October 23, 1944. The reconstruction was completed in 1957. The altars, apse, church tower and sacristy with the paraments and cult objects remained intact.

Plans by the Diocese of Essen provide for the church to be profaned in 2020 . The basis for the profanation is the vote of the parish of St. Josef, which was handed over to Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck in December 2017 as a result of the parish development process . Since December 31, 2017, the local pastor has raised lively resistance to the impending profanation due to the posting of the so-called "ten commandments" in the showcase of the Church of St. Antonius Abbas.

Furnishing

The organ from Orgelbau Romanus Seifert & Sohn was installed in 1958. It consists of around 1400 pipes spread over 22 registers and has two manuals and a pedal. In autumn 2008 it was completely renovated.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the parish in 1922, the church was repainted. In the apse behind the high altar a picture of Christ was created by the Bottrop artist Josef Hennefeld, a student of the well-known Cologne artist Jan Thorn Prikker . In 1940 the apse was decorated with the mosaic picture that is still preserved today. In the same year the two mosaic pictures of the side altars were laid and the six of the eight church windows with motifs of saints were renewed. The latter were destroyed by the bombing of World War II.

In the nave there have been windows made of cathedral glass by an unknown artist since around 1950 . In 1960 lead-framed antique glass windows were added under the organ gallery, the artist of which is also unknown. In 1981, lead-framed antique glass windows by the artist Markus Nowak were installed in the sacristy.
