St. Benedikt in Munich-Schwanthalerhöhe

St. Benedikt is a Catholic parish church on Schrenkstrasse in Munich 's Schwanthalerhöhe (" Westend ") district. It is dedicated to the saint and monk Benedict of Nursia . It belongs to the parish association Munich-Westend along with the churches of St. Paul , Maria Visitation in Ridlerstraße and St. Rupert on Kiliansplatz .

location

The church is located west of the center of Munich, just a few minutes' walk from Theresienwiese (including the Oktoberfest venue ) and the Augustinerbräu between Hackerbrücke and Donnersbergerbrücke .

history

In 1873 the “Catholic citizens of Munich” received a very successful appeal for donations to build another church in the parish of St. Boniface . Three years later, the required building site in Schrenkstrasse was acquired. The new church was built according to the plans of the architect Johann Marggraff and was consecrated on October 23, 1881. The building was badly damaged by bombs in October 1944 during World War II .

After the reconstruction, services could be resumed in 1950. Services in foreign languages ​​are also held here. Next to this church there is also a day care center and the Kaspar-Stangassinger-Haus , where many foreign-language missions are based.

The organ was built by Carl Schuster. It has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal.

Bells

The steeple-crowned church tower houses a four-part bronze bell with striking notes d 1 -f sharp 1 -a 1 -d 2 .
