The Catholic Church of St. Bonifatius in Westrhauderfehn , a district of the East Frisian community Rhauderfehn , was built in 1852/53.

history

The building of a Protestant and a Catholic church had already been approved in the award document for the establishment of the Rhauderfehn of April 19, 1769. An independent Catholic community was founded in 1831. Its first church was an emergency building in which the church and the rectory were united under one roof. This soon no longer met the needs of the community, so that a new building was planned as early as 1833. However, the parish was refused permission for this because both the ecclesiastical and secular authorities doubted whether the necessary financial resources could be raised locally. The authorities refused to plan improvements to the existing church building for the same reason. The search for a location was also difficult. According to the award document from 1769, the Catholic Church should be built in Rhauderfehn. However, it was important to keep a large distance from the Protestant communities in Rhaude and Collinghorst . This problem was finally solved by an area swap , in the course of which the Fehncompagnie received a strip of land from the neighboring municipality of Langholt . This fact is the reason for the rumor that still exists today that the church is in Langholt.

Finally, the church was built in 1852/53 by the master builder Balle from Aurich and expanded in 1906 with the addition of a transept and a choir room . In 1970, 1979 and 1990/1991 church renovations and redesign of the choir followed.

The parish is responsible for the St. Michael day care center, which has existed since 1976.

Together with St. Bernhard Flachsmeer , the parish of St. Bonifatius forms a parish community and belongs to the Deanery of East Friesland in the Diocese of Osnabrück .

description

Choir window with St. Boniface

St. Boniface is a hall church of red brick with West Tower. The tower is integrated into the nave and is divided into three storeys by surrounding cornices. The top floor serves as a bell house and has a round-arched sound opening in round-arched blind niches, over which the clock face of the tower clock is attached. The eight-sided pointed helmet is slated and is crowned by a tower knob, a cross and a weathercock.

The nave with a gable roof has a slightly lower transept. The long sides are divided by pilaster strips that end in a frieze . Arched windows illuminate the interior. The polygonal choir is also slightly lower than the rest of the building. The lead glass windows of the choir have been preserved in their original state and some of them show figurative representations.

Furnishing

View into the choir room

The sculptures of a Pietà from around 1480, a Saint Anthony from the first half of the 18th century and the Holy Family, which was created around 1760, are said to come from the abolished Franciscan monastery in Aschendorf .

The altar, consecrated in 1991, contains relics of the holy martyrs Leopardus and Micinus and of St. Niklaus von Flüe .

The organ was built in 1861 by Carl Krämer with a pneumatic keyboard and register action . Franz Breil renovated the instrument in 1977, which has 16 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
