St. Bernhard (Flachsmeer)
St. Bernhard in Flachsmeer is the only Catholic parish church in the otherwise largely Protestant community of Westoverledingen in southwestern East Friesland . It was built in 1860 in the neo-Romanesque style.
history
After the Reformation , Catholic pastoral care was no longer regularly guaranteed in Flachsmeer. From 1831 to 1853 the place was supplied by the Langholt mission station . Flachsmeer was founded in 1853 as a mission station of its own. Flachsmeer has been a parish since 1908. An emergency church served as a temporary measure from 1853 to 1860. Today's parish church was built in 1860/61. The choir and a sacristy attached to the side were added in 1904. In the course of a renovation in 1978, the sacristy was expanded. St. Franziskus in Ihrhove and 1964 St. Bonifatius in Völlenerkönigsfehn were built as branch churches .
The brick building was erected as a hall church with a rectangular apse and saddle roof. The long sides are structured by pilaster strips . The fields each have a round arched window and are closed off by a round arch frieze . Half of the bell tower protrudes from the nave. The two bells were cast in 1885 and 1960.
The community forms a parish community with St. Bonifatius Rhauderfehn and belongs to the Deanery of East Friesland in the Diocese of Osnabrück .
Furnishing
The organ was originally built for St. Michael in Leer and sold to Flachsmeer in 1867. In 1908 the Carl Haupt company from Ostercappeln carried out a renovation, and again in 1976 it was completely rebuilt by the Speith-Orgelbau company from Rietberg after a renovation by Alfred Führer in 1948 . The instrument has a cone chest and twelve stops on two manuals and pedal as well as a pneumatic playing and stop action .
In 1968 the interior was redesigned: the room was painted and furnished with a new altarpiece, a mercy seat depicting the Trinity , and a popular altar . The interior now offers space for 250 visitors.
