Reformed Church in Grotegaste

The Evangelical Reformed Church of St. Johannes Baptist in Grotegaste , municipality of Westoverledingen ( East Friesland ), was built in 1819 in the classicism style on a terp .

history

A previous building existed in the Middle Ages. Noteworthy are the two 14th century bells that have been preserved and are still in use today. The older Marienglocke was cast by Harmannus in 1352. The mantle bears an inscription and a line drawing of the severed head of John the Baptist , to whom the church owes its patronage . The other bell dates from 1364 and is named after Saint Catherine . In the course of the Reformation , the community changed to the Reformed Confession at the beginning of the 16th century. From the library of Pastor Alarich Sibelius, the writing “Adversus Anabaptistas” (“Against the Anabaptists”) by the reformer Heinrich Bullinger from 1565 has been preserved. It is now in the Johannes a Lasco library . In 1800 the bell tower attached to the west had to be renewed after the old tower was lost. The current church was built in 1819 on the same site. The two long sides are divided by pilasters into four wall fields each into which large, arched windows have broken.

Until 1965 the parish, to which Hilkenborg, Coldemüntje and Dorenberg also belonged, had its own pastor. Since 1987 the Reformed parishes Ihrhove , Esklum , Driever and Grotegaste have been combined and share two pastors.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is closed off by a wooden barrel vault that rests on ornate consoles. It is unusual for a Reformed church that two steps lead to the choir . The pulpit from the 18th century comes from the previous building. The pulpit in gray version with gold surrounded by an inscription on the wall, holding a Bible written in black word in mind: "Your word is lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" ( Ps 119.105  LUT ). In front of the pulpit are two tombstones from 1632 and 1698.

The chandelier is not dated. The Vasa Sacra include a silver chalice from 1690 and a silver jug from 1890, both of which are on display in the Johannes-a-Lasco library today, a bread plate (after 1888) and a baptismal bowl (1910).
