António José Cavaco Carrilho (born April 11, 1942 in Loulé , Portugal ) is a Portuguese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Funchal .

Life

After attending the seminary of the Diocese of Porto , he was ordained a priest on July 28, 1965. The diocese remained the place of his pastoral work.

On February 22, 1999 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Porto and titular bishop of Tamalluma . The bishop of Faro , Manuel Madureira Dias , gave him episcopal ordination on May 29th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Porto, Armindo Lopes Coelho , and his predecessor Júlio Tavares Rebimbas .

On March 8, 2007 he was appointed Bishop of Funchal to succeed the resigned Teodoro de Faria .

In the summer of 2018, the priest Anastácio Alves , who had already been accused of sexual abuse of children three times and had been suspended from office by Carrilho, disappeared without a trace. The latest allegations against Alves were kept secret from the police by the Roman Catholic Church; the latter only found out about the suspicion of pedo-crimes in the diocese through the child and youth protection commission of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice . The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith did not initiate proceedings against Alves either.

On January 12, 2019, Pope Francis accepted António José Cavaco Carrilho's resignation.
