Nuno Brás da Silva Martins (born May 12, 1963 in Vimeiro , Portugal ) is a Portuguese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Funchal .

Life

Nuno Brás da Silva Martins studied at the Seminary of the Patriarchate of Lisbon , for which he received the sacrament of ordination on July 4, 1987 .

After serving as a chaplain in Lisbon , he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1990 to 1993 and received his doctorate in fundamental theology . From 1993 to 2002 he was active in the formation of priests. At the same time he was director of the diocesan newspaper Voz da Verdade until 2003 . From 1999 to 2002 he was professor at the Catholic University of Portugal and head of the diocesan commission for the permanent diaconate . He was also a professor at the Gregoriana. From 2002 to 2005 he was Rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome. Subsequently, he was Regens the seminary and head of public relations for the Patriarchate.

On October 10, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the titular bishop of Elvas and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Lisbon . The Patriarch of Lisbon, José Cardinal da Cruz Policarpo , donated him episcopal ordination on November 20th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization , Archbishop Rino Fisichella , and the Bishop of Porto , Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente . On July 13, 2016, he became a member of the Communication Secretariat (today: Dicastery for Communication ) of the Roman Curia .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Funchal on January 12, 2019. The inauguration took place on February 17th of the same year.
