from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Teodoro de Faria (born August 24, 1930 in Boliqueime , Madeira ) is a Roman Catholic bishop. From 1982 to 2007 he was Bishop of Funchal .

He was ordained a priest on September 22nd, 1956 in the diocese of Funchal. After pastoral work, he was appointed Bishop of Funchal on March 10, 1982 and ordained by Maximilien de Fürstenberg on May 16, 1982 . Faria's episcopate was marked by sexual abuse and one murder case.

In the 1990s he came under fire for publicly protecting the Engelwerk priest Frederico Cunha ORC , who was convicted of murder and sexual abuse in his diocese in 1994. On this occasion he verbally attacked the Jews . The bishop was sentenced in 1994 for pressuring the judiciary. Cunha escaped from prison in 1998 and remained in the Funchal diocese's staff until at least February 2016 . It was not until ten years after the murder that Faria admitted that he was aware of Cunha's pedophile practices.

He was accused of pedo-criminal acts in 2005 and 2007 and was only transferred to new parishes by Faria, but like Cunha, diocesan priest Anastácio Alves, whose case was never resolved, disappeared without a trace in 2018.

In 2006 Faria asked Pope Benedict XVI. for reasons of age to his release, which took place on March 8, 2007. On June 6, 2008, Faria was raised to Grand Commander of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique , founded in 1960 by the last dictator of Portugal , Américo Tomás .
