Esklum is a place in the municipality of Westoverledingen in the district of Leer in East Frisia .

history

In earlier times, Esklum is said to have been called Esschelshem , which means a home, place or house on good dry farmland. On the map of Ubbo Emmius the place is called Esculum .

The Esklumer Church is one of the oldest in Oberledingerland . One of the two bells dates from 1377. The west tower of the church dates from the 15th century. Due to the existing loopholes and a chimney system, it is assumed that Esklum Church was a fortified church .

On January 1, 1973 Esklum was incorporated into the new municipality of Westoverledingen.
