Mitling-Mark is a place in the municipality of Westoverledingen in the district of Leer in East Frisia .

history

Mitling, also called Mittelinge or Mydlinghe, was first mentioned in a document on August 24, 1436. In this document, Hero Aldsenna to Boecmora ( Backemoor ) swears to the Hamburg bailiff Detlef Bremer zu Emden Urfehde . A “Jelke to Mydlinghe ut Overledingherlande” appears as guarantor.

Mitling was originally understood to mean a middle road between Völlen and Grotegaste , where a village later settled. A castle is said to have once stood in Mark. Hisco Cirks († 1592) and Hero Uniken († 1623) are named as owners of Burg zu Mark. The Mitling-Mark windmill was already on a map from 1595.

Mitling and Mark are actually two localities, with Mitling being the parish . Arends reports in his description of the earth from 1824 that the "village Mitling has 5 houses and 28 inhabitants and the village Mark has 30 houses and 192 inhabitants".

The Evangelical Reformed Mitling-Marker Church was built on a terp in the 13th century .

On January 1, 1973 Mitling-Mark was incorporated into the new municipality of Westoverledingen.

Development of the place name

Mark is the older part of the place. It is first mentioned in the 10th century as Marcberga . Later names are in Marki (10th / 11th century), Marckum (1564), Marck (1589) and Midling Marck (1645). The name goes back to the location on the southern border of East Frisia. It is identical to the old Frisian mark as well as the old Low German marka , which denote a mark or border . Mitling was first mentioned as to Mydlinghe in 1436. The name midling has been passed down from 1696 and the current spelling has been in use since 1824. The name is of Frisian-Low German origin. It designates and the settlement in the middle .
