Großwolde is a place in the municipality of Westoverledingen in the district of Leer in East Frisia . “Wold” is generally understood to mean a low, water-rich land on which an undisturbed alder forest settles.

history

Until 1200, Großwolde was west of today's “im Hammrich”. Due to the increasing wetness of the soil, the residents were forced to move their houses to the Geestrand.

The church with the massive west tower dates from the 14th century.

On January 1, 1973, Großwolde was incorporated into the new municipality of Westoverledingen.
