history

As a medieval church village , Steenfelde consisted of around 13 farms. At the end of the 17th century, today's Steenfelderfehn was settled. The moor and heathland areas east and south-east of Steenfelde were also slowly settled 300 years ago. The settlements of Steenfelderfeld and Bullerbarg were created around 1800.

Steenfelde became an independent parish around the 14th century , the Steenfeld church itself was built in the 13th century. The Reformed parish of Steenfelde experienced a Münster raid around 1671. The pastor at the time, Catechist Overmann, is responsible for the fact that the congregation changed to the Lutheran denomination .

During the Napoleonic period, Steenfelde was a bailiwick in the office of Leer. At the end of the 19th century this bailiwick was dissolved and the municipality of Steenfelde was created. In 1962 one formed a joint municipality with the communities Großwolde and Flachsmeer . In 1973, through the regional reform, today's municipality of Westoverledingen with Steenfelde as a locality was created.

In 1856 the Emden – Rheine railway line through Steenfelde was put into operation, and the Steenfeld station was opened in 1911. A few years later a post office was added, from where the communities of Steenfelde and Flachsmeer were supplied by post.

It is certain that there was already a village school in 1684 . Lessons were later provided with two schools. Since the regional reform there has been a primary school for Steenfelde and Großwolde on Schulstrasse. On this road also are main and secondary school housed in the school center Collhusen.

The Second World War killed numerous people in Steenfelde. The attempt to stop the Allies from moving into the garrison town of Leer in April 1945 caused severe damage to the building.

On January 1, 1973, Steenfelde was incorporated into the new municipality of Westoverledingen.

economy

Agriculture ensured the Steenfelder's livelihood for centuries . At the beginning of the 20th century, jobs in the cities around Steenfelde became more and more important and industry in Leer and Papenburg in particular rose to become the most important employer. The land consolidation and the technical progress changed the agriculture considerably and lost its importance. The number of other self-employed people in Steenfelde also fell sharply in the 20th century. Changed economic and social conditions caused most of the restaurants to die out. But it was precisely the centralization of trade, commerce and administration that caused many jobs to be lost in Steenfelde. Steenfelde not only lost importance through its incorporation into the municipality of Westoverledingen. Steenfelde station closed in the 1960s and the post office closed in the 1980s . Since the 1970s, there has been no local police station to ensure security and order. Only the church and the volunteer fire brigade remained as the last public facilities in the old village center.

Today the inhabitants of Steenfeld live mainly in the settlements . Only in the last few years did the number of self-employed people in Steenfelde increase again. In the two industrial areas “An der Bahn” and “Lüke-Smit-Straße” there are again numerous businesses. With around 100 employees, Plock Elektro GmbH is the largest employer in Steenfelde. The Steenfelder Betonwerk Johann Meinders GmbH produces prefabricated parts for industrial and residential construction right in the center of the village . Since 1997, Steenfelde has been visible from far away through the approximately 104 hectare wind turbine park. Windpark Steenfelde GmbH & Co. Betriebs-KG had wind turbines with a capacity of 9 MW installed.

Life and culture

Today, the village of Steenfelde is primarily a residential community. In addition to a few employees in the village itself, most employees in Steenfelde commute to the surrounding cities.

Church, clubs, associations, working groups and the volunteer fire brigade determine cultural life. Every two years the Steenfelder meet at the village festival, every year the sports club organizes, among other things, an Easter bonfire and a football tournament for the street teams, the volunteer fire brigade invites you to the winter festival and on April 30th to the May party. The parish invites, among other things, to the parish festival and the Christmas market .
