The Roman Catholic Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is a church in the Bavarian town of Wechterswinkel , a district of the municipality of Bastheim in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld . It is one of the architectural monuments in Bastheim and is registered under the number D-6-73-116-58 in the Bavarian list of monuments .

The church is dedicated to the holy brothers Kosmas and Damian .

history

After the dissolution of the Wechterswinkel Monastery in 1592 with a church completed in 1179 and consecrated to St. Margaret, the Mother of God and the Most Holy Trinity, the monastery building was converted into the St. Cosmas and Damian Church in 1811. Part of the former church complex was demolished. Extensive renovations took place inside the church in the 1980s and 1990s.

Description and equipment

Today's St. Cosmas and Damian Church is designed as a three-aisled basilica with a non-retracted choir with a slightly retracted apse at the eastern end. The west facade of the basilica merges into a massive roof turret. Inside, the church houses a high altar from 1680 with a crucifixion group and four columns and coats of arms designed as twisted grapes, among others by Prince-Bishop Peter Philipp von Dernbach . The side altars with a central painting of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan and the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg and the central figure of Mary with child were created around 1690 and around 1720.

The church has a four-part minor bell .
