St. Georg (Miel)
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Georg in Miel is a parish church in the Swisttal pastoral care area in the Meckenheim-Rheinbach deanery ( Archdiocese of Cologne ). It is dedicated to Saint George .
Building history
The church was built in the first half of the 12th century and has seen numerous renovations and refurbishments since then. In the 13th century, the choir was probably enlarged and decorated by Cologne artists with a cycle of frescoes with scenes from the Virgin Mary.
During the Reformation , the church was rededicated to Protestantism by the lords of the castle zu Miel. In the middle of the Thirty Years' War she was re-Catholicized by the abbess of St. Maria in the Capitol in Cologne. At that time it was given a new look by demolishing the Gothic aisle and fitting it with baroque altars and the stucco ceiling from 1636.
The coat of arms of the former municipality reminds of the legend of the patron saint St. George: "In a green field a golden dragon pierced by a sword in the chest".
