Alt St. Petrus and Paulus (Odendorf)
The old Catholic parish church St. Petrus und Paulus in Odendorf , a district of the municipality Swisttal in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia , is a Romanesque pillar basilica from the early 12th century. It was redesigned towards the end of the 15th century in the Gothic style and baroque in the 18th century . The church is a protected architectural monument .
history
The church, which was originally only dedicated to the apostle Peter , is mentioned in 1274 in the tax register of the Cologne archbishops , the Liber valoris . In 1481 the Carthusian monastery of St. Alban in Trier took over the patronage right . During this time the windows of the apse were walled up and the windows of the side aisles were redesigned in Gothic style. The interior walls were plastered and decorated with frescoes . From 1720 to 1786 the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style and a sacristy was added.
In 1906 a new parish church was consecrated and the old church was rebuilt for its new use. The choir was separated by a wall and served as a house chapel for the adjoining convent. A ceiling was drawn into the nave . The upper room was used as a dormitory by the nuns and a kindergarten was housed in the lower room. When a new kindergarten was built in 1957 and the monastery had already been closed, the old church was able to be completely restored and returned to its original condition.
architecture
Exterior construction
The church is made of quarry stone masonry in which Roman bricks and cast concrete blocks are built. Sintered lime plates were sometimes used for the corner blocks. A slate-covered roof turret with a pointed helmet from the late Gothic period rises above the west gable .
inner space
The church is laid out as a three-aisled pillar basilica. A choir square and a semicircular closed apse adjoin the flat-roofed nave in the east. The Romanesque windows are still preserved in the upper storey . The barrel-vaulted side aisles are pierced by late Gothic pointed arch windows.
Murals
Remains of the late Gothic wall paintings are still preserved on two arches. They are made in al-fresco technique and depict the birth of Christ and Mary on the spinning wheel with an angel.
Furnishing
