St. Georg (Schleiz)
The Protestant town church St. Georg is located in Schleiz in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .
history
Schleiz was mentioned for the first time on April 22nd, 1232, and the town church, which was the foundation of the Teutonic Order , already existed at that time. In 1284 she was given the right of patronage . The basic substance of the building is from the late Gothic period . The outside is inconspicuous.
In 1475, 1517, 1599, 1673 and 1689 the church was mostly badly damaged by fire and rebuilt again and again. On April 8, 1945, she fell victim to the American air raid on Schleiz . Among other things, the nave and gallery vaults as well as the furnishings (pulpit from 1822) and the important altarpiece by JS Nahl 1721-23, restored 1936-39, were destroyed. After reconstruction in the old form and a new color version, the church was consecrated again in 1952 (1st Advent). The organ building companies Gerhard Kirchner from Weimar and the Sauer company from Frankfurt (Oder) carried out the new construction of the organ . The restoration of the altarpiece was carried out by K. Thümmler from 1954 to 1959.
