Architecture and history

The single-nave church was built from rubble stones in the 13th century . On the north side there is a chapel built in the 13th century with a square floor plan, which is used as a baptistery. To the west of the nave there is a church tower standing across the nave , the construction of which is dated to the first half of the 13th century. It has three-part acoustic arcades and is covered by a gable roof. In 1633 and 1655 the nave was destroyed by fires and later renewed. In 1767 a porch was built on the south side of the ship. On the night of August 7th to 8th, 1928, the nave was again destroyed in another fire and rebuilt in 1929/30.

The interior of the ship is spanned by a wooden barrel. The church tower was originally opened to the nave through a late Romanesque double arcade. Today's interior design comes from the reconstruction from 1929 and is a rare example of church furnishings in the 1930s. In particular, the north and west gallery, pulpit altar and organ date from this time. The pulpit altar is on the eastern wall. On the pulpit is the inscription The word of our God remains forever.

To the left of the altar is a historic chair that survived the fire disasters. It is called the Luther chair because the reformer Martin Luther is said to have sat on it during a visit to Oppin.

The chapel on the north side has a pointed arched barrel vault. It is decorated with paintings from 1930. The paintings depict scenes from the life of John the Baptist and were created by Gizela Leweke-Weyde . A sacrament niche and an ogival device niche from the 13th century have been preserved in the chapel as older furnishing elements.

The church organ dates from before 1930 and was created by Rühlmann. Presumably it comes from another church and only came to Oppin after the recent fire. It was overhauled in 1999 and repaired again in 2005. There are two bronze bells in the church tower . The larger one dates from 1655 and weighs 550 kilograms. At the time of the fire, the church had four other bells, but the heat damaged them. Four new bells were cast from them, but only the second largest of the cast bells has survived to this day. In 2001 she received a new clapper . At the same time, a new yoke and an electronically controlled bell system were installed. In 2007 the belfry was repaired.

In 2001 the church tower was renovated and re-covered, and in 2002 the church clock was repaired. The pavement to the church was paved in 2005. In 2006 the altar windows were renewed and the windows of the chapel restored. In the same year work was carried out on the roof drainage of the church. In 2007 two sandstone pillars in the sound arcades were renewed. Further work in 2008 concerned the renovation of the roof of the church entrance and in 2009 the renewal of the electrical installation and fumigation against woodworm infestation.

To the south of the church there is a war memorial commemorating the victims of the First and Second World Wars .

In the local monument register , the church is listed as a monument under registration number 094 55515.
