Church of St. Jacobi in Rüdigsdorf

history

The nave was built in the 16th century for the village church located on a 700 m² hillside area . A carved inscription on the north side of the church bears the year 1527. The masonry is made of anhydrite stone and gypsum mortar , with porphyry , greywacke and sandstone .

Building parts

tower

The church tower substructure has a cross vault inside the substructure. Above it is a framework with a gable roof . According to the expert opinion, the former pillars had to be demolished, contrary to the opinion of the citizens, which at the same time resulted in the original view.

Bells

In the tower there are two very old bronze bells with inscriptions hanging in a steel bell cage . They had been exempted from war because of their scientific and historical value . The big bell had to be handed in in 1942. However, it was found again after World War II and returned.

organ

It was built in 1885 by the organ builder Otto Petersilie from Langensalza . It was in a bad position and had to be relocated from 1956 to 1958. The work was carried out by the Böhm company from Gotha . It is currently only playable to a limited extent.

Baptismal font

A rare Romanesque font probably dates from the 18th century. But it was exchanged for a wooden one and later sold, which is inexplicable.

cenotaph

In the churchyard there is the war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War with a plaque with their names. Since 1999 there has been a plaque to commemorate the victims of the Second World War.

Renovations

1956 to 1958 a trench was dug on the north side to the floor depth, the floor insulated, the supporting pillars repaired, the sponge-infested galleries torn down, a new organ gallery was created and the pulpit was redesigned. In 1980 another major interior renovation took place, in which the church stalls were replaced and the masonry plastered from the inside.

After the fall of the Wall , even bigger actions took place. Nevertheless, the church had to be closed from March 2005 for security reasons. The outer walls were secured for 120,000 euros, the roof of the nave and tower completely renewed, the entablature and partitions renovated and the false ceiling from the 1960s removed. In 2008 the first service was celebrated.
