The Romanesque St. Jakobus Church (also: Appenkirche ; Abbekirch ) is today a cemetery chapel near Merenberg in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Central Hesse . It is a protected cultural monument . It is located about half a kilometer outside the village on the road from Merenberg to Neunkirchen .

history

The Jakobuskirche near the deserted village of Appenkirche was built around 1200. The exact history of the origins of the church is unclear. Until 1534 she was vicarie of the original parish of St. Johannes Lahr and was then removed from the parish as part of the Reformation in the county of Nassau-Weilburg . After the expansion of the Merenberg Marienkapelle to a local church at the end of the 16th century, the Jakobuskirche lost its importance and became the chapel of the surrounding cemetery.

description

The basalt stone church has a half-hip roof . The building has a floor area of approximately 22 × 8 meters. The square cross-ribbed choir is slightly drawn in. The older windows are loopholed, the younger ones are arched like the entrance. Inside there are two medieval faded frescoes. Originally the church had a roof turret over the choir .

Next to the church, which is surrounded by a natural stone ring wall, there has been a modern steel bell tower since 2011.
