The Protestant village church St. Johannes is in Bretleben , a district of An der Schmücke , in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

history

The design for the new St. John's Church was created under the leadership of the Berlin architects Hans Grisebach and August Georg Dinklage . It was built by August Oetken from August 1897 . One of her two predecessors was in the same place as the current one. The other in the upper village belonged to the Oldisleben monastery . Due to the poor condition of the village church and the favorable economic conditions, it was decided to build a new church.

architecture

The cross-shaped hall church with polygonal closed choir and west tower with stone facing was built from 1895 to 1897 in the eclectic style. Inside you will find Rabitz vaults and stuccoed vault systems. Almost everything has been lost from the equipment.

The church was no longer usable between 1960 and 2000 due to damage to the roof and the interior as well as vandalism . With the help of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , the KiBa Foundation and funds from the state as well as the parish and donations , the general repair and renovation was initiated.

It is the only sacred building designed by the Grisebach & Dinklage architects that is largely in its original state .
