St. John's Church in Bochum-Wiemelhausen

The St. Johannes Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Kirchviertel , Wiemelhausen district of Bochum . It was based on plans by 1886-87 Hermann Wieler built and on 15 September 1887 consecrated .

history

The intensive residential development in the course of industrialization also caused the desire for new church buildings to grow in the south of Bochum. The planning for the St. John's Church began in the late 1860s with the purchase of land and the construction of a parish center with a school. The first holy mass was celebrated in the chapel on November 1, 1868, All Saints' Day.

Soon the premises were no longer sufficient, and in the midst of the Bismarck culture war the construction of the new representative church was pushed ahead. One year after the consecration followed in October 1888, the separation of the church from the provost parish and the establishment of an independent parish .

In the 1890s, St. Johannes suffered mining damage , which resulted in a lengthy process.

1930–1931 the church was expanded to include a vestibule in the northwest and a choir in the southeast. At the same time, it now received the 30 m high bell tower.

St. Johannes was one of the four Catholic churches in the city that survived World War II without any significant damage; only the picture windows were destroyed.

In 1964 the church received a new organ. From 1969 the choir was expanded into a transept from 1930; a new choir was added. The interior was redesigned in the spirit of liturgical renewal after the Second Vatican Council. On December 18, 1971, Bishop Franz Hengsbach completed the re-consecration.

In 1975 and 1982 a crowned Mother of God from 1630 and a statue of the parish priest John the Baptist from 1750 were acquired for the church.

Construction and equipment

St. Johannes is an essentially neo - Gothic three - aisled, rib-vaulted hall church with a transept . The slender square tower from 1930 shows forms of brick expressionism .

The church windows, the Way of the Cross and other fittings were designed by Joseph Albert Sögtrop (1926–1980) from 1968 until the 1970s.
