The Protestant Church in Gelbingen

The Johanneskirche is a Protestant church at Untermünkheimer Straße 12 in Gelbingen , a district of Schwäbisch Hall in the district of the same name in Baden-Württemberg .

history

In 1342 the Lords of Eltershofen donated a chapel, which was dedicated to John the Baptist , together with a chaplain . Until the Reformation, the Gelbingen church was a branch of Erlach, after which the parish seat changed.

In the 19th century, the high-Gothic church, whitewashed outside and inside, still existed in Gelbingen, the appearance of which is insufficiently described in a source at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1907, Eugen Gradmann only recorded briefly: "Choir in the tower, arched with cross ribs without consoles, smooth keystone." According to Gradmann, the church had a two-part Gothic window on the east side.

Inside there was a simple wall tabernacle and a carved altar grille in front of the altar. The paintings on the altarpiece depict the resurrection of Christ , Ecce homo and Christ as the Good Shepherd . The furnishings also included an enthroned Mother of God from the 14th century; this wooden figure was also whitewashed in Gradmann's time. The western gallery had a parapet made of sawn planks from the 16th or 17th century. Two bells hung in the tower; one was provided with the names of the evangelists and came from the middle of the 14th century, the other, by Stephan Bruncler and Johann Arnold, carried the slogan "Soli Deo gloria", at least one coat of arms and a relief crucifix. When Gradmann wrote his book The art and antiquity monuments of the city and the Oberamt Schwäbisch-Hall , published in 1907 , the demolition of this church was planned. As early as 1847 Rudolph Moser had stated: "The church of St. Johannes in the upper village is small and inconspicuous and needs at least one enlargement."

In 1945 the church was destroyed except for the tower choir. A new church was built according to plans by Walter Zoller , with the new nave being moved to the east side because of the neighboring street. The Gothic tower with the former tower choir was integrated into the new building, but redesigned as a new entrance hall. It was built in 1950 and can accommodate 270 visitors.

Today's Johannes or Johanniskirche is one of the churches of the Protestant parish in Gelbingen.
