St. Johannes (Speyer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parish church of St. Johannes (Baptist) in Speyer was a sacred building near the Augustinian monastery . It stood from the 11th to the beginning of the 19th century.

Construction and history

The Johanneskirche was one of the oldest churches in the city of Speyer. The core of the Romanesque hall church with choir and northern choir flank tower dates from the 11th century. After it was destroyed by the Speyer town fire in 1689, it remained in ruins for many years. The church was only poorly restored around 1770. However, the church was soon a victim of the French Revolution and was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.

In its place, the Speyer city administration had the Palatinate State Library built, in whose building the Speyer City Archives have been housed since the end of the 20th century . Only the name of Johannesstrasse still reminds of the Romanesque church from the Salian era .
