The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a listed church building in Beverungen , a town in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It belongs to the parish of the Holy Trinity Beverungen in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The church was founded under Corveyer's patronage and was first mentioned towards the end of the 11th century. The original parish church was so badly damaged during the Thirty Years War that it had to be demolished. Today's quarry stone structure was built on the same site from 1682 to 1698. The builders were Marcus and Karl August Weyrather from Tyrol. The building is a four-bay hall church with a three-sided end, slightly pointed arched windows and a built-in west tower, which is crowned with a high tiered Welschen dome . In 1893 the sacristy was added, in 1966 the parish hall was added and in 1971 the choir yoke and the apse of a vaulted previous building from the second half of the 12th century were excavated.

In the yokes with different depths, cross ribs and strong belt arches are attached to rectangular templates with profiled fighters as structures. The baroque version was uncovered in 1973, the main features restored and revised in 1998. The keystones are provided with episcopal coats of arms, west of Ferdinand von Fürstenberg , east of Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich . The choir was originally only lit by oculi .

Furnishing

The wood-carved furnishings come from the time it was built. The high altar is an aedicula - reredos with double vine columns, blown gable and top from 1690. In 1973 the original version was uncovered and supplemented. On the side the Saints John the Baptist and Liborius are depicted. The altar sheet was created in 1681 by the church painter Johann Georg Rudolphi from Paderborn. In the years between 1743 and 1755, the furnishings were supplemented by two side altars to form a three-altar group, and in 1973 the original marbling was exposed and supplemented. The figures of Saints Liborius, Johannes Nepomuk, Georg and Katharina on the right come from an older collection; on the left, Saints Martin and Agnes. The altar leaves were created by Hunstiger in 1940 .

The marble font is a work from around 1700. The wooden pulpit is dated 1709. One oil painting from the 17th century depicts the Holy Family with Anna and Joseph's death, two more depicts Saint Catherine (1702) and Saint Apollonia (1710). The Way of the Cross with oil paintings and inscriptions was created by Stanislaus Stegmüller in 1775. Several wooden figures show a double Madonna, the Immaculate and St. John the Baptist (18th century) as well as the instruction of Mary, St. John Nepomuk and St. Barbara (20th century). A silver gilded chalice with precious stones and enamel medallions was made in the 18th century. The organ is the work of an unknown organ builder from around 1700 with 27 stops on two manuals and pedal .
