Saint John the Baptist

The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a listed church building in Deifeld , a district of Medebach in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The parish was first mentioned in a document in 1237. Walls of the original church are partly still recognizable. Two yokes have been preserved from a small Romanesque hall church from the 13th century . The massive west tower also dates from this period. The spire was renewed in the baroque period. During the church visit in 1716 it was found that the roof and floor were in disrepair and needed to be repaired. The main altar was dedicated to John the Baptist. The church had three bells. The first evidence of an organ dates from 1856. After the choir was demolished in 1877, the building was extended to include a two-bay, three-aisled transept with a choir and side chapels. The south aisle is slightly wider than the north. In the west tower a cross vault rests on ogival wall panels. The access to the former staircase in the western tower wall is walled up.

Furnishing

In 1716 it was reported that the tabernacle had been forcibly broken into twice in a row, and that monstrance and ciborian had been stolen.

Others

The patronage ceremony was on June 24th; the parish fair took place on the Sunday after St. Gallus (October 16). The church building was consecrated again in 1645.
