Palace Chapel of St. John the Baptist in Markt

The Catholic castle chapel of St. John the Baptist in Markt , a district of the market town of Biberbach in the Swabian district of Augsburg in Bavaria , is a protected architectural monument .

description

A late Gothic four-axis palace chapel was probably already in place at Burg Markt around 1550 . In 1738, the master builder Simon Rothmiller from Höchstädt was commissioned by Joseph Maria Fugger von Wellenburg to build a new chapel. The master mason Joseph Holzapfel from Biberbach and the lock carpenter Thomas Mayr from Markt were involved in the construction. The three-aisled, pilaster-structured rectangular building and the eastern tower with onion dome were completed by 1739. On the east side of the tower is a sandstone plaque with the Fugger coat of arms and the initials RIAFGVKWHZB 1710 (= Rupert Joseph Anton Fugger Count of Kirchberg and Weißenhorn, Lord of Babenhausen 1710). In 1923 the church was donated by the Fugger family to the benefit of the Markt Foundation.

Furnishing

The stucco work is attributed to Johannes Finsterwalder. The high altar comes from the carpenter Michael Bertele from Sontheim , who had it made for a piece of over 410 florins and a version by Hans Georg Hözle from Sontheim. The figures on the high altar were carved by Joseph Höchstätter from Biberbach. In 1739 he was paid 16 florins for the figures of the four evangelists that are no longer preserved today . Johann Georg Wolcker painted the frescoes and the altarpiece Baptism of Christ . A carving relief with Christmas representations around 1510 is from the circle of the carver Daniel Mauch .
