St. Josef (Dorsten)
The St. Josef Church is a sacred building in the Dorsten district of Hervest. The church impresses with its objective sobriety and its architecture is reminiscent of the Zollverein colliery .
history
The church was designed by Hermann Frank . Frank chose two cubes that are nested inside one another as the outer shape, one as the nave and the other as the church tower . Dark red clinker was used as building material . The foundation stone was laid in 1928. On July 18, 1930, the church was consecrated to Saint Joseph .
The church was badly damaged during the Second World War . All church windows were destroyed in an attack in 1943. In March 1945, a low-flying attack caused further serious damage. The church bells were dismantled as early as 1942 in order to supply non-ferrous metals to the German armaments industry .
After the war, however, replacements for the bells were soon procured. In 1949 new windows were installed and finally the interior was completely renovated in 1954.
At the beginning of 2007 there was a serious fire in the youth home, which is located directly under the church. The cause was a cable fire. The youth home was then completely renovated and renewed.
In 2013, sand was heaped up on the north nave of the church and a ramp was built with curbs, which also allows people with restricted mobility to enter the church. Before this installation, the entrance to the church was only accessible from the west side via the stairs.
