St. Joseph (Styrum)
The St. Joseph Church is a listed, Catholic church in Unterstyrum , a district of the Ruhr area town of Oberhausen . It is the mother church of numerous parishes in the south of Oberhausen and north of Mülheim and the city's oldest still existing Catholic church.
From January 1, 2020, St. Joseph will be used by the apostolate of the Society of St. Peter in the Ruhr area for their parish in Oberhausen. At the same time it is also supported by the Herz Jesu-St. Joseph is used for services within the parish Herz Jesu, who owns the building.

The Josephskirche is located in the center of Styrum on Martin-Heix-Platz. The parish home and the Thomas More youth home are located close to the church on Kaplan-Küppers-Weg to the north. Directly adjacent are Josefstrasse, named after the church, the Helios St. Elisabeth Clinic , the St. Joseph Cemetery, with a chapel, and the Catholic elementary school Luisenschule . The St. Joseph Kindergarten and the Vincenzhaus retirement home are also in the immediate vicinity.
history
Unterstyrum, the part of Styrum that was later incorporated into Oberhausen, was originally part of the Bergisch rule Broich . During the Reformation , Broich adopted the Protestant faith. The only church in the vicinity was henceforth the St. Marien Castle Chapel near Styrum Castle , which was part of the empire-free Styrum rule , an enclave in the Broich rule.
In 1763 the parish of St. Marien in Mülheim was reestablished, to which the Unterstyrum Catholics also belonged from then on. In order to shorten the way to the church for the people in what is now the south of Oberhausen, an emergency church was built in Unterstyrum in 1862 , which was consecrated to St. Joseph of Nazareth . Between 1871 and 1874 the small emergency church was replaced by the large neo-Gothic building that still exists today. The steeple of St. Joseph measures 73 meters.
In 1889 the Archbishop of Cologne finally elevated the Rectorate of St. Joseph Styrum to an independent parish. In addition to Lower and Upper Styrum, the whole of Alstaden and the new mayor's offices in Oberhausen and Dümpten also belonged to the parish's territory. Many parishes followed:

From 1929 to 1945 Heinrich Küppers worked as chaplain at St. Joseph, particularly in the pastoral care of young people. During the time of National Socialism he was a great critic of the regime and was arrested several times. In 1944 he was taken to the Dachau concentration camp admitted that he survived. In 1956, Leostraße north of the church was renamed Kaplan-Küppers-Weg in his honor .
The church suffered damage during World War II , but was not destroyed. The interior also remained intact. In 1958 St. Joseph, like the entire dean's office Alt-Oberhausen, became part of the newly founded Ruhr Diocese of Essen .
On April 22nd, 2007, in the course of the restructuring of the Diocese of Essen, St. Joseph was merged with its daughter parishes St. Antonius Alstaden and Herz Jesu Oberhausen as well as the daughter parish of Herz Jesu, St. Peter Alstaden, to form the large parish Herz Jesu Oberhausen. From 2007 to 2019 the former parish formed the parish of St. Joseph (known as the “congregation”), but had shared a pastor with the neighboring congregation, Herz Jesu, since 2017. Since 2019, both communities have formed a joint municipal council. From January 1, 2020, the right of use of the church will be transferred to the apostolate of the Petrusbruderschaft in the Ruhr area, which is founding its new congregation in Oberhausen. The congregation Herz Jesu / St. Joseph continues to use the Josephskirche on weekdays for services and official acts.
Bells
The bell was replaced in 2014 after a long period of preparation:
From the old 1947 cast, four-part bells remained only the steel bells in St. Joseph (called Dicker Jupp ) back with the 4600 kg, the heaviest and the percussive sound as 0 -1 is the deepest bell of the city of Oberhausen.
Two more bells, Herz Jesu (chime: c 1 ) and Elisabeth (chime: f 1 ) were cast again. The Herz-Jesu-Bell is named after the daughter parish of St. Joseph and the current parish church, Herz Jesu in Oberhausen, and the Elisabeth bell is named after the neighboring Catholic St. Elisabeth Hospital.
In addition to these three bells the town acquired two bells, Peter and Paul (strike note: dis 1 ) and Maria (strike note: f 1 ) from a deconsecrated church in Gladbeck .
