St. Justinus (Alzenau)

St. Justinus (1758)

The Catholic parish church of St. Justinus is the baroque town church of Alzenau , a town in the Lower Franconian district of Aschaffenburg . It was built between 1757 and 1760 according to plans by the Amorbach master builder Johann Martin Schmitt on the town's market square, but was consecrated in 1758 before completion. The construction followed an earlier church building on a hill opposite Alzenau Castle , which was demolished in 1754 due to dilapidation. In terms of its architectural design and furnishings, the red sandstone building is a typical example of church construction in the Lower Maing area, which is under the influence of Kurmainz .

With the consecration of the church in honor of the martyr Justin the Confessor , the Alzenau people build a bridge up to the year 834. At that time, the Archbishop of Mainz, Otgar, brought the bones of the saint from Rome. They first came to the Justinuskirche in Höchst am Main and from there in 1298 to St. Alban's Abbey near Mainz . Part of the relic also ended up in the monastery near the Einhard Basilica of Seligenstadt . The veneration of Justinus came to Alzenau through the Benedictines there, who also looked after the old parish church of Wilmundsheim , which was located on today's Alzenau cemetery grounds.
