The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is a listed church building in Büsdorf , a district of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The origins of the church can be traced back to the tenth century. In July 927, Archbishop Wichfried of Cologne donated a church and land from his own property in Boziliesthorpe (Büsdorf) to the St. Ursula monastery in Cologne . The abbess held the church patronage until the abolition of the monastery in 1802. Büsdorf has had St. Donatus as the second parish patron since 1772. Until the end of the 19th century , the predecessor church was a small Romanesque church that stood in the cemetery. It had to be canceled because of its dilapidation.

The cross-shaped, neo-Gothic brick building with a choir of a yoke in the 5/8 end was built from 1894 to 1895 according to the plans of the Cologne architect Theodor Roß . The west tower , converted into an octagon on the upper floor, is in front. The church was consecrated on October 13, 1895. During a comprehensive renovation, the vaults , which were in danger of collapsing, were changed and renewed in 1990 . The single-nave building is 32 meters long, the basic color of the walls is white, the window frames, vaulted ribs and belt arches are sandstone red.

Furnishing

  • A wooden crucifix from the third quarter of the eleventh century comes from the previous building . The original version has been scrapped, the cross has been shortened. It is an important work of art from the Salian period, following the Ottonian Gero cross in Cologne Cathedral. It has probably reached the church more recently, possibly from the Ursula monastery .
  • The high altar shows scenes from the life of Abraham and the two parish patrons. The representation of the Sacred Heart conveys a previously widespread representation of piety.
  • The choir stalls , the confessional and the sermon chair are in neo-Gothic shapes. They were created in a workshop in Aachen.
  • The celebration altar stands in front of the high altar, it was recently carved from the wood of the former communion bench .
  • The marble baptismal font was donated for the previous church in 1867
  • The brass chandelier from the 19th century bears the inscription Christ est Lux (Christ is the light)
  • The organ was installed in 1928 by a Zülpich company. The organ bears the script: Laudate dominum in tympano et chordis, laudate eum in organo et choro (Praise God with tambourine and playing strings , praise him with organ playing and singing). Since the renovation in 1965 the parapet is organ loft color adopted .
  • The memorial plaque for those who died in the two world wars dates from 1921. It was added after 1945
  • The altar of the Mother of God of Perpetual Help is to the left of the entrance
