St. Lioba Church

history

Catholic services have been celebrated in Bad Liebenzell since 1902. For decades the faithful met for church services in the Adler inn, in the Protestant church, in the old forester's house or in the Marienstift. After the Second World War , the number of Catholic Christians increased due to the influx of displaced persons and foreign workers. During the season, numerous guests stayed in the spa town for a cure , so that the desire for their own place of worship continued to grow. After many failed land negotiations, the Calw parish in Bad Liebenzell was able to acquire a pharmacy and garden, the owner of which was particularly interested in building a church. The architect Alfons Leitl was entrusted with the planning for the church , although the auxiliary bishop Wilhelm Sedlmeier had warned the community about the architect, as he never kept to the financial framework.

The foundation stone was laid on September 13, 1959 , and the church was consecrated on June 4, 1961.

The independent parish of St. Lioba / St. Aurelius was founded in 1963. Later it was absorbed by the parish association Calw / Bad Liebenzell.

Building description

Alfons Leitl had a decisive influence on Catholic church building after the Second World War . He favored an orthogonal floor plan . The church was in the style of post-war modernism built. The floor plan of the nave is trapezoidal. Since the wall on the side of the portal is not straight but arched at an angle, the result is a pentagon. This wall is made of reinforced glass concrete , the rest are made of concrete . Next to the nave, which is covered with a gable roof , there is a chapel on the south side for the weekday devotions and the sacristy . The gable roof is extended there by a pent roof .

The pointed bell tower is on the north-east corner of the building.

Furnishing

Simplicity and clarity are the top priority in the furnishings, this applies to both the altar and the ambo , there is no pulpit . The cross on the altar wall and the Easter candlestick are also kept modern. The church interior is traditionally divided into altar and church pews, which are optically separated from each other by differences in height.

In 1964 an organ with 11 registers was made by the company EF Walcker & Cie. acquired.
