St. Lucia Chapel 2011

The St. Luzikapelle (also commonly known as the St. Luzius Chapel , not to be confused with the nearby St. Luzius Church ) is about 960 meters above sea level, about 45 minutes' walk from the farm (in Chur's old town), on a hiking trail above Schanfiggerstrasse in a rock grotto on the Mittenberg in the Grisons capital Chur . It is under the patronage of Luzius von Chur and is owned by the St. Luzi seminary of the Chur Theological College .

history

The first document mentions a place of worship at the site of today's chapel on March 23, 1385. The visit to the site on this day was connected with an indulgence granted by Chur Bishop Johann II von Ehingen . The chapel itself was built between 1645 and 1660 after the Graubünden turmoil had ended.

In 1672 the chapel was robbed. The case caused a sensation in the whole of Graubünden, as it ran counter to the efforts of political consolidation and denominational pacification after the devastation of the war. The perpetrator, Georgius Salis from Jenins and living in Chur, could be identified. He was punished with lifelong banishment from the Free State of the Three Leagues .

In 1976 the chapel was restored by students of the seminary. In the same year it was returned to worship by Bishop Johannes Vonderach .

construction

The chapel has an almost square floor plan and is designed as a one-room hall church . Behind with a granite slab occupied Altar a simple iron cross is introduced into the wall.

On the left on the wall the figure of the saint of Lucius can be seen in the form of a plaster sculpture. As a hagiographical characteristic, he holds a walking stick in his hand.
