History and description

The first mention of the Ginderich Church, built in honor of the Holy Mother of God, who showed herself gracious to the callers by miraculous signs , was made in 1190 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Anno II. The west tower of this Romanesque- style church was preserved. The choir and nave were demolished in the 14th century and replaced by a larger building to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims . The originally venerated image of the Virgin Mary was probably considered out of date after the reconstruction and replaced by a Gothic seated Madonna, which was revised again at the end of the 19th century. With the accession of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm to the throne in 1640, the pilgrimage came to a legally mandated end. In 1870 Heinrich Wiethase added a sacristy and a vestibule to the three-aisled church on the south side, a confessional, choir stalls, etc. a. renewed. In December 2005 the diocese of Münster officially declared the pilgrimage site of Ginderich again.

Furnishing

The most important works of the church include the almost perfectly preserved baptismal font dating from about 1470-1480 and four late Gothic sculptures that James , Rochus of Montpellier and probably Winfried Boniface and the founding bishop of the Church represent.

In March 2016 the church received a restored English organ from the Conacher workshop (19th century), which was provided by Orgelbau Schulte . The organ has two manuals and 20 stops , three of which are new on existing sticks. The first manual for the Choir Organ is vacant. The instrument has mechanical manual action and pneumatic pedal action.
