St. Mary's Assumption (Oedekoven)

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Catholic church in the district of Oedekoven in the municipality of Alfter in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was planned and built in 1955 and 1956 by the architect Emil Steffan (1899–1968), one of the most important church builders of the 20th century. Your appliances are available as monument under monument protection .

location

The church hugs the upper part of the foothills below the chapel of St. Mary's Marriage . Even from a distance, the building has a down-to-earth character. Set back from the surrounding streets, the church can be reached via footpaths that lead into a tranquil forecourt enclosed by a border wall, the rectory and the church with the sacristy annex.

architecture

Exterior: The rectory is a plain, white, single-storey building with a simple slate saddle roof. The lower main entrance to the house is protected under a round arch made of rubble stones, the building material of the church. The outside is made of gray quarry stone masonry, which is reinforced by powerful buttresses. The roof of the church building corresponds to that of the rectory, supplemented by the small bell rider.

Entrances : The entrance is possible centrally on the west side of the church through a simple wooden portal with a squirrel handle or through an almost hidden wooden door with a rabbit handle, which is accessible via a small extension with a deep-drawn roof. The simple, single-nave, white plastered church interior is accessed from the main entrance below the organ stage in a west-east direction, so that the altar is facing the entrance and is slightly elevated under the round arch of the small cone .

Baptistery : In the north side of the church wall at the level of the end of the organ stage is a narrow passage, as if dug into the masonry. It leads down three steps into a small round baptistery with the simple baptismal font in the center under the deep-drawn roof of the side entrance extension.

Chapel : The chapel of St. Mary's Marriage, which was consecrated in 1757, is located near the church. It used to be the only place of worship in the area , today it is mainly used for meditative services .

Windows : Light is brought into the church space by the conspicuous feature: Your large, trapezoidal cut round arched glass windows in a longitudinally aligned, strict rectangular grid structure with representational representations. On the one hand they are powerfully colored, on the other hand they are restrained in shades of gray and yellow. With the choice of colored church windows for the new church, a typical characteristic of Rhenish churches was adopted, the numerous Romanesque and Gothic churches of which required colored, painted panes. The need for colored church windows was therefore uninterrupted even after the Second World War during the development phase of this region, and numerous artists continued the great tradition of Rhenish glass painting. There is a large round window above the main entrance of the church, which names the artist and the glass painting workshop. The round window has the so-called “mercy seat” in its center: Christ, hanging on the cross, is held by God, and the dove of the Holy Spirit hovers over both of them. An oversized goblet can be seen behind the cross. There is also a small narrow window on the south-eastern side of the apse, as well as two similar windows in the baptistery and one in the porch of the side entrance. The stained glass window artist was Hans Lünenborg (1904–1990).
