St. Mary's Assumption (Solingen)
The parish church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a Roman Catholic church in Solingen - Gräfrath . It belongs to the building ensemble of the former Gräfrath monastery .
history
The church is based on a previous Cappella Greverode , which was built before 1180. Parts of a second church building, a Romanesque pillar gallery basilica from 1195, are visible in the left central nave wall after being uncovered in 1991. From 1185 to 1187 the women's monastery Gräfrath of the Augustinian choir women was established here. In 1250 the late Romanesque west building was built. The portal and the southern axis are still there. After 1300 the third church was built as an extension to the two-aisled hall gallery church. In 1666, 1685 and 1717 the church was destroyed by fires in Gräfrath.
The current fourth church building, as a reconstruction while retaining Romanesque and Gothic outer walls, was completed in 1727. In 1748 the baroque furnishings took place .
In 1803 the monastery was abolished under Napoleon and the church was converted into a parish church . Late Romanesque elements were restored in 1851, 1878 and 1991.
monument
On October 2, 1984, the church, with the street address Klosterhof 6, was recognized as a monument.
organ
The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1893 by the organ builder Clemens Schneider with 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal . As early as 1912, the organ builder Johannes Klais (Bonn) had more or less rebuilt the instrument in terms of sound and technology. Today the instrument has 22 stops on two manual works and a pedal and is arranged romantically . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
