St. Maria, mother of the church, is a Roman Catholic church in the Ahrbergen district of the Giesen community in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . Today it belongs to the parish of St. Vitus with its seat in Giesen in the deanery Borsum - Sarstedt of the diocese Hildesheim .

history

The new parish church of St. Maria was built from 1966 to 1968 in the center of Ahrbergen. It replaced the dilapidated Lady Chapel built in 1872 . The consecration took place on January 28, 1968 by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Pachowiak . The previous parish church of Peter and Paul on the former Burgplatz became a branch church and has been used as a cemetery church ever since.

A bell tower was built from 1977 to 1978. The bells were consecrated by auxiliary bishop Heinrich Machens .

On November 1, 2014 the parish of St. Vitus - Giesen was established. In this context, the parish of St. Maria, mother of the church in Ahrbergen, was abolished and, together with its subsidiary church of St. Peter and Paul, was assigned to the newly established parish. Since then, both churches have been subsidiary churches of St. Vitus.

architecture

The modern church building was designed according to the plans of the Essen architect Kleffner .
