Wilhelm (Cammin)

Wilhelm († October 31, 1253 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman in Pomerania . He was Bishop of Cammin from 1244 until his resignation in 1251 .

After the death of Bishop Konrad III. in 1241 the Camminer bishop's chair remained vacant for a long time. The reasons for this are not known. In 1244 the Camminer cathedral chapter elected one of its members, Wilhelm, as the new bishop. So far, he had only received minor orders , but, as the cathedral chapter put it in its letter to the Pope, he was considered a prudent, determined man with experience in spiritual and secular affairs. Pope Innocent IV commissioned Bishop Konrad von Meissen in 1244 to examine the election and, if necessary, to carry out the episcopal ordination. But Bishop Konrad did not carry out this commission, probably because of disputes between Cammin and Meißen. Wilhelm finally received the episcopal ordination in 1246 by the papal legate and Archbishop of Prussia Albert Suerbeer and two other bishops.

During the tenure of Bishop Wilhelm, the boundaries of his diocese to the neighboring dioceses were arranged: in 1246 through the mediation of Albert Suerbeer to the diocese of Meißen , the diocese of Brandenburg and the diocese of Lebus , in 1247 to the diocese of Schwerin .

When the Duchy of Pomerania lost the Uckermark with the city of Prenzlau with the Treaty of Landin in 1250 , Bishop Wilhelm managed to maintain the area's spiritual affiliation to his diocese.

Through an exchange deal with Duke Barnim I of Pomerania, Bishop Wilhelm gained possession of the state of Kolberg in 1248 as a secular domain for his diocese; in return he gave the Duke the land of Stargard as a fief, from which he in turn lent a part to the Camminer cathedral chapter. Under his successors, the state of Kolberg became the core of the monastery area, where the bishops and rulers ruled.

Bishop Wilhelm resigned from his office in 1251; why is not known. His successor as bishop was Hermann von Gleichen . The former bishop Wilhelm appears as a witness in documents, including documents from his successor. He died in 1253 and was buried in the Franciscan Church in Prenzlau .
