The parish church of Straden is the central church of a former fortified church and is located in the market town of Straden in the district of southeast Styria . The Roman Catholic parish church , consecrated on the feast of the Assumption of Mary , belongs to the Radkersburg deanery in the diocese of Graz-Seckau . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

In 1188 the first pastor, Henricus de Merin, was named in a document from the Archbishop of Salzburg. The church was destroyed by fire in 1460. The church was rebuilt from 1469 to 1472 with the Order of St. George . Baroque additions were made from 1700 to 1702. The church roof and the upper area of ​​the church tower were destroyed by the war in 1945 and rebuilt in 1947. An exterior restoration was carried out in 1958, an interior restoration in 1970.

From the 17th century, a pilgrimage to Maria am Himmelsberg was created with the Gothic figure of Maria with child, the so-called Himmelbergerin .

architecture

The late Gothic church has a two-bay choir with a five-eighth end and a ribbed vault on wall services and flat buttresses. The four-bay nave in the width of the choir has a four-diamond vault on wall services with consoles. The undivided west facade has a grooved pointed arch portal. The side aisles with galleries, which were added from 1700, have the stairs to the galleries in the first sloping yoke. The late Gothic three-axis organ choir rests on a ribbed vault. The late Gothic square tower stands on the north side of the choir. The bell bullet and the onion helmet were put on in 1771. The baptistery is on the ground floor of the tower with a ribbed vault and a late Gothic portal. Above the tower portal is a coat of arms with the year 1513. In the upper floor of the tower there used to be an armory.

Furnishing

The high altar with a loose column structure with a volute crown from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century bears a Gothic figure of Mary in the middle around 1520. The pulpit around 1769 was created by the sculptor Matthias Leitner, it was documented in 1768. The side altars from 1913 were built by the Vogl company in Hall.

The organ with the organ choir parapet is from 1760.

Funerary monuments

Wehrkirchhof

With the Wehrkirchhof in 1605 the Stradeners successfully defended themselves against the Heiducken . The south-east Styrian border area suffered particularly badly from the attacks of the Kuruzen (Hungarian rebels) from 1704 to 1706.

From the old churchyard wall, a 2.20 m high wall remains with loopholes in the northeast. The churchyard wall closes the branch church of St. Sebastian a. There is a high lining wall made of tuff stone blocks with supporting pillars, marked with 1521 in the southeast with a late Gothic niche. Next to it is a stone figure Pietà with the indication 1758 in a brick aedicula . There are Biedermeier shops on the churchyard wall .
