The Catholic Church Maria im Busch with the patronage of the Birth of Mary is a branch and pilgrimage church in the rural town of Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

history

The church is one of the oldest in Dingelstädt. The earliest documentary mention dates back to May 10, 1424, but the essentially Romanesque architectural style indicates a much older age. The legend traces its origin and the pilgrimage back to an apparition of Mary in 1232. The miraculous image , a pietà made of linden wood, dates from the middle of the 15th century. Today's building was essentially built after the devastating Dingelstädt fire in 1838.

On the eve of the birth of the Virgin Mary, September 8th, and on the following Sunday, pilgrims from the region still come in large numbers to the Sorrowful Mother of God of Dingelstädt. On Easter Monday, the local kindergarten children walk around the church with decorated hobby horses , a custom that is said to go back to the sparing of the church during the Thirty Years' War .

The church got its popular name from the hill on which it was once overgrown with bushes. Today it is mostly called Marienkirche or little church .
