St. Marien (Bernkastel-Kues)
The Church of St. Marien was a Roman Catholic branch church of the Trier diocese in Bernkastel-Kues in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belonged to the parish of St. Briktius Kues.
history
The St. Marien branch church was located on a narrow piece of land between Bergweg and Brüningstraße in the Kues district. It was built in 1963 according to the plans of the architect Klaus Frey and consecrated on May 1, 1963.
After the decision to give up St. Mary's Church was made in the late 2000s, the last regular service was celebrated in 2008. On February 14, 2011, St. Marien was profaned by decree and demolished seven years later. A dormitory for 24 people with intellectual disabilities has been on the property since November 2019, sponsored by St. Raphael Caritas Alten- und Behindertenhilfe GmbH.
Building description
Exterior
The exterior of the St. Marien Church was simple. The white building with a diamond-shaped floor plan was spanned by a tent roof. The church tower was a little apart and only connected to the church building by a wall. The original tower from 1963 reached a height of 30 m. For structural reasons, this was demolished in the 1990s and replaced by a tower that is only 15 m high.
Interior
The interior of the church was also simply designed in the colors white and gray. The wide church space was spanned by a tent-like wooden ceiling, which had its lowest point above the organ and increased in height towards the altar wall. The two walls, which met at an obtuse angle in the chancel, were broken through to the ceiling with large, clear window facades.
organ
The organ was built in 1966 by the Michael Weise company and has been located in the Catholic school and Franciscan church in Großkrotzenburg, expanded by three registers since 2012 . The instrument had 13 stops on two manuals and a pedal in Kues . The playing and stop actions are mechanical. The disposition of the Weise organ at the location in the Marienkirche in Kues was as follows:
