The Catholic parish church of St. Martinus is a listed church building in Richterich , a district of the city of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The community emerged from a Palatine manor chapel that existed around the year 1000 . In the 15th century, a church building presumably from the 12th century was replaced by a new building. In the 18th century the church was again dilapidated and was considered too small. In 1791 a new church was built, whereby the square west tower from the 15th century, which was made in small cuboids and was stable enough, was preserved and connected to the new nave.

The five-sided east choir was added around 1855. The tower was later crowned with a pointed, octagonal dome . A flat stucco ceiling was drawn into the interior of the brick hall . The walls are divided by pilasters . There are still remnants of the baroque high altar , the organ was built in 1836 by G. Maaß.

The church survived the war years relatively unscathed. In 1951, two choir windows were renewed according to designs by Anton Wendling , and another six new windows were designed in 1958 by the Düsseldorf glass painter Herbert Kaufmann. The two bells of the church date from 1954 and are made of steel. The earlier bronze bells had been confiscated and melted down in the 1940s.

organ

The small organ in the gallery has 15 stops distributed over a manual and pedal. It was built in 1836 by the company of the Cologne organ builder Engelbert Maass (Maahs) and is the oldest organ in Aachen. In 1988 the instrument was restored by the Weimbs company . The disposition is as follows:
