The Evangelical Lutheran village church St. Matthäus is in the Bachfeld district of the city of Schalkau in the Sonneberg district in Thuringia .

history

As the oldest village in the Sonneberg district, Bachfeld has the youngest church . It is said that Bachfeld owned a church as early as 1400. Then April 11, 1945 came and at 3:47 p.m. the church clock stopped because American tanks had destroyed the church and other buildings in the village. The clerk was only able to save the Bible and the cross from the altar , because the men were missing to extinguish.

In 1947 the forged congregation plans to rebuild. For the Reformation Festival in 1950, the foundation stones were laid above the cemetery . Then the actual construction work began and in 1952 the parish celebrated the topping-out ceremony . The sculptor Fritz Carl from Poppenwind depicted the picture of St. Matthew in scratch plaster behind the altar. On the other side is a gentleman's word.

The church was consecrated on November 4th 1953 by the regional bishop Moritz Mitzenheim in front of citizens and believers from near and far.

In 1966 the congregation erected a memorial in the anteroom of the church for the fallen fathers and sons of the wars with the heading “Do not forget the victims of the wars!”.

In 1988, on the occasion of the church jubilee, the interior of the church was designed in color. A winter church was also built in .

In 1992 the church received an electric bell system . In 1994 and 1995 the extensive renovation measures began, which were carried out on the church roof from 1999 to 2000.
