history

Evangelical St. Matthew Church in Bachfeld

The place was first mentioned in a document from Fulda. It was about the surrender of the lands in Bachfeld and Heid because of a horse theft in 929 by the noble owners of Gruber Castle .

Bachfeld has always been the largest farming village in the district of Sonneberg with its more than 1000 hectare parish corridor . Originally there were two main courtyards in Bachfeld, the Petter or Scheeßhof and the Schaumburger, later the vicarage and a few side courtyards. This probably explains the existence of two churches in Bachfeld, mentioned in the 14th and 15th centuries.

After looting and pillage during the Thirty Years' War, the areas of Bottigental, Gundersdorf and Wollmitz came into being, and later the Grub zu Bachfeld district. Today the hamlet of Gundelswind also belongs to the village. Of the three former Bachfeld mills, only the lower mill still exists, it was owned by Schaumburg.

The old village church and eight farmsteads burned down when American troops fired tanks in 1945.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Gundelswind was incorporated.

In 1953 Bachfeld received the first new church building of the post-war period. The Matthäuskirche was consecrated at the new location above the cemetery.

Before May 31, 1995, Bachfeld belonged to the administrative community of Schalkau , after which Schalkau was a fulfilling municipality . The Thuringian law for the voluntary reorganization of municipalities belonging to the district in 2019 provided for the incorporation into Schalkau. The law was adopted by the state parliament on September 12, 2019 and came into force on December 31, 2019.

coat of arms

DEU Bachfeld COA.svg
Blazon : “In the shield, which is half-split and divided from silver and red to blue, a wavy sloping bar in mixed up colors at the top, front and bottom; at the top a silver flax blossom. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The horizontal division into silver and blue shows the connection with the Schaumberg noble family , to whom the area belonged for a long time. The flax blossom refers to the earlier flax cultivation and the sloping wave bar is a connecting element that represents the Itz and the Krensenbach that run through the municipality.
