St. Matthew in Zinzendorf

History and description of the building

The church is a high, single-nave vaulted building with a retracted, semicircular apse. The core of the church dates from the 12th century. In the east gable and west wall there is a Romanesque oculus , which indicates that the church had a secular upper floor in the early days and thus possibly served as a place of refuge / accommodation. The church is thus in a building tradition with other Romanesque country church structures with a secular upper floor , such as B. with the St. Agidius Church in Schönfeld , the Kreuzhof Chapel near Regensburg, St. Koloman in Harting near Regensburg, the St. Agidius Church in Hof near Oberviechtach , the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Obertrübenbach , the churches from Wilchenreuth and Schönkirch in the northern Upper Palatinate.

The eastern part of the barrel vault in the main nave, raw corbels on the eaves and a Romanesque arched window at the apse of the apse also indicate the original building . The other windows were enlarged at a later time.

On the choir arch and on the north wall of the nave are the remains of wall paintings from the 15th century (crucifixion group on the choir arch). The altar dates from the late 19th century, with figures of the Mother of God, Saint Joseph and the church patron Saint Matthew . The apse was added and the church tower was built in 1880.

In 1954 and 1978 the church was renovated.
