St. Matthias (Theinfeld)
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Matthias is located in Theinfeld in Bavaria , a district of the Thundorf municipality in the Bad Kissingen district in Lower Franconia . It is dedicated to the Apostle Matthias .
The church belongs to the Thundorf architectural monuments and is registered under the number D-6-72-157-33 in the Bavarian list of monuments .
history
Today's St. Matthias Church goes back to a chapel that was already documented in the 14th century. This first chapel may have been a fortified chapel.
This former, originally Catholic chapel was initially used by Protestants after the Reformation and later as a simultaneous church by both denominations. In 1599 the church tower was built on the eastern gable side of the chapel. An inscription on the south-east corner of the tower under the waterfall cornice of the second tower floor suggests the year of construction 1599 and Veit Hert as the builder. As part of the construction of the church tower, the choir and nave were connected by a breakthrough through the eastern church wall.
In 1747 the chapel was extended by about three meters, the entrance moved from the west to the south, and the third floor of the tower with three sound windows and the Julius-Echter tower were added. In 1753 the community received the high altar from the Bildhausen monastery, which was built around 1700, has been revised several times and is still present today . In 1838 another renovation took place, in the course of which a new organ was installed.
In 1972 this former church building was largely demolished (only the tower and the chancel were preserved) and replaced by today's, much larger St. Matthias Church. She is now purely Catholic, as only a few Protestant citizens still live in the village.
