history

Mauritius is the patron saint of the church on Dorfstrasse in Büden . The church is dated to the late 13th century and based on the patron it is assumed that it was donated by the Archdiocese of Magdeburg . The church tower and nave essentially date from this period. The extension north of the nave was not built until later, the exact time is unknown. In the south side of the nave are the remains of a door frame , so the original entrance to the church was probably at this point. Until the Thirty Years War , jurisdiction lay with the cathedral chapter of Magdeburg . While the church of St. Nicolaus in the neighboring village of Nedlitz was destroyed to the ground during the Thirty Years War, the church in Büden was largely spared and it was not desecrated by the Swedes as a horse stable. In 1641 the church and school clerk Bartholomäus Pitzschius became the new pastor of the parish of Nedlitz-Büden. Since there was no possibility of accommodating the pastor in Nedlitz due to the arson by the Swedes, he and his family were to move into a house or stable building in Büden. Also in Büden no adequate accommodation could be provided for the pastor and his family and so he moved into the church in protest of the residents and used it as a house, stable building and barn. The complaint of the residents of Büden about this has survived to this day:

Complaint from the poor and distressed subjects from Büden, because the pastor did not preach on three Sundays. In addition, he made a manure yard out of our churchyard, under which our parents and grandparents lie, our churches into barns, which he laid full of grain, made a hatch at the altar, since he brought the grain in during the harvest, a chicken house in it, as well sometimes during the sermon the chickens, big and small, run around the church and the clucking and shouting cannot be heard during the sermon. He should clear out and clean our church and the churchyard again. We cannot have joy with our priest and pastor, who gives us cause and cause for all reluctance, we submit this obediently to save our honor and need.

The patron saint Franciscus von Benningsen then visited the parish and stated:

The baptismal shrine is covered with grain, the chicken house, pig and cow sheds in the church are used, deeds stand in front of the altar and threaten (stink), cattle maids climb to the preacher's chair in front of their bed walk, maids sleep in a chamber behind the altar.

On February 18, 1643, the pastor had to quit his job due to pressure from the population and the patron saint.

After the Thirty Years' War the church was extensively repaired and a new bell was purchased in 1654 . From 1871 to 1879 the church was renewed and renovated. At that time the church was the branch church of the church play. In 1929 ball lightning struck the church and destroyed the bells and set the nave on fire. After 1945, the church had to be renovated, and although donations were successfully collected for this, it failed due to the political situation. Hence the church continued to decline. The last baptism took place in 1965 and the last confirmation on May 26, 1968, at which time parts of the church were already closed. The church was completely burned down by arson on the night of August 30, 1985 . Since 2000, the specially founded association has been taking care of the reconstruction of the church. Today it can be rented for parties.

Furnishing

The communion chalice , a jug and a silver wafer box have been preserved in the possession of the Nedlitz-Büden parish. The Holy Communion Cup was donated by the archdeacon of the Magdeburg cathedral chapter Erasmus Diedrich von Benningsen and is decorated with the coat of arms of the founder, the name IESUS and a small crucifix . The altar and the remains of the baptismal font were removed from the dilapidated church in 1983 and secured. The organ pipes had already been stolen at this point.

Peal

A new bell for the church was purchased in 1654 after the end of the Thirty Years War. Friedrich Brackendorff from Halberstadt cast a new big bell in 1784. During the First World War , the bell cast in 1784 was confiscated as a metal donation, after the war a steel bell was procured as a replacement. In 1929, a 45 cm wide bell from 1654, with the inscription SOLI DEO GLORIA , and the steel bell were destroyed by a lightning strike .
