St. Michael is a former Catholic church in Wilhelmshaven . It is on the corner of Freiligrathstrasse / Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Strasse in the Neuengroden district .

history

The church was built after the Second World War for the Catholic refugees from eastern Germany . Before the church was built, the refugees celebrated their masses in a barrack church on the Rosenhügel in the city park. In 1951 the parishes of Neuengroden, Altengroden, Rüstersiel and Rosenhügel were merged to form the parish of St. Michael.

After the groundbreaking on July 5, 1954, the foundation stone was laid on August 22, 1954. On November 11, 1954, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated.

On April 28, 1955, the bells were installed in the free-standing bell tower. One of the two bells is from 1649 and comes from Giersdorf in Silesia . On September 29, 1955, the consecration took place by official Heinrich Grafenhorst .

In 1970 the church was rebuilt for the first time. The furnishings (altar, tabernacle , ambo , cross) were created by the artist Egino Weinert . On September 17, 1972, the congregation got a community center next to the church. A kindergarten was completed on April 26, 1975. In 2008, all Catholic parishes in Wilhelmshaven, Sande and Schortens- Roffhausen were merged to form the new parish of St. Willehad .

On November 17, 2013, the church was profaned by Councilor Monsignor Bernd Winter .

On April 1, 2014, Malteser Hilfsdienst e. V. the former church building and the property. The Maltese set up their Wilhelmshaven office in the buildings. Since then the property has also been called "Little Malta".
