The Sankt-Pankratius-Kirche is a Catholic church in Paffendorf , a district of Bergheim . It is dedicated to St. Pancras .

history

The church was built around the year 900. In the 11th century it was enlarged in the Romanesque style . By 1507 the nave had been extended in the late Gothic style. In 1746 the village and the church were badly damaged in a fire. However, frescoes from the end of the 15th century have been preserved in the church choir .

In 1804 the parish came into possession of a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua . The statue had previously been in the Bethlehem Monastery near Bergheim. In 1860 the church building was given neo-Gothic additions . In 1862 the von dem Bongart family , then owners of the neighboring Paffendorf Castle , donated the main altar, which is still in the church today. The last renovation of the church so far took place between 1974 and 1978.

Furnishing

In addition to the statue of Antonius and the main altar, an Antwerp reredos in the right aisle is worth mentioning, dating from around 1515–1520. It is the former cross altar of the Essen Minster . The pulpit dates from 1619.
