The Church of St. Simon and Judas ( "Old Church Ss. Simon and Judas Reken", based on the museum "Museum Old Church Reken" / "Sacred Museum Old Church Reken" ) in the Reken district of Groß-Reken, Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia Westphalia , is the former Catholic parish church of the village. Since the completion of the new, modern Church of St. Heinrich , it has been partly a sacred museum, but is also used for church services.

The essential pieces of equipment (altars) have remained in their original locations since their construction. The church receives its special importance from its not widespread two-aisle structure and even more from the fact that it is a church building that has not been extended or changed in a neo-Gothic style. Due to the historicist new buildings and the subsequent demolition of their predecessors at the end of the 19th century, only a comparatively few medieval village churches in the Münsterland have survived.

Building history

The oldest part is the basement of the Romanesque tower from 1200; its upper floor was built around 1300. This is followed by a Gothic nave from the 15th century. The north aisle is dated 1529 and is attributed to the Coesfeld builder Henric de Suer . During a renovation in the second half of the 20th century, some grave slabs were removed from the floor of the church and the wooden paneling of the side altar canteen ; the whereabouts of these things is unknown. In 1956 the church was Ss. Simon and Judas filming location for the comedy "Das Dorf in der Heide", which was otherwise mostly filmed in Klein-Reken. There the church is still in the state before the restoration, e.g. B. a central aisle separates the rows of banks and the tower portal has not yet been closed.

Building description

Ss. Simon and Judas is a two-aisled church with a Romanesque tower. The south aisle is vaulted, has two bays in the nave and the choir has one yoke and the 5/8 end . The south aisle has four axles with a 5/8 end, but with a mirror ceiling. Vaulted pillars on the wall show that a vault existed or was at least planned. The date of construction of the mirrored ceiling and the reason for its erection are not known.

Furnishing

  • Romanesque baptismal font, the upper section of which was reshaped in the baroque style in 1732.
  • Gothic choir stalls.
  • Baroque altar in the main and side aisles.
  • Baroque communion bench
  • Baroque pulpit; new rise; No sound cover, neo-Gothic pulpit cross.
  • South German figures; depicting a St. George.
  • Various statues e.g. Partly Gothic, created for this church, including Johannes Nepomuk (baroque)

There is a small electric organ on the gallery in the museum part. The sacristy is located under this organ stage. Various versions of the side altar have been uncovered on a trial basis by a restorer and left visible; the same applies to the choir stalls, which, however, have been redesigned based on the oldest version found.

Sacred museum

The sacred museum in the north aisle was created from a temporary exhibition and mainly presents showcases with Vasa Sacra , some Bible tiles , and a representation of Our Lady on a wall tile with Dutch inscriptions. On the gallery there are showcases with devotional literature and missals and a piece of a Baroque altarpiece from the St. Gudula Church in Rhede . There are also portraits from the Coesfeld Jesuit College . A collection of wood-carved nativity scenes from the first half of the 18th century is remarkable : three kings, a black-skinned figure (possibly camel driver) and two shepherds, as well as a kneeling female figure. You are probably for Ss. Simon and Jude were created.

In the summer months the museum is open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
